How do you choose a wine?

I'm newly getting into wine, which is very exciting. The rest of my family and my SO already love wine, and this is the first year that it doesn't taste like rubbing alcohol to me lol. So my question is, how do you choose a wine? At the store where there are thousands of choices, what do you pick up? Do you go by the name? Label design? Year? Region? It's a tad overwhelming! Thank you for your input :)
