The business of retail

I'm exploring the idea of a specialized wine store with ancillary services but am wondering how feasible of a business it is given that online and big box have been squeezing out the mom and pop shops. Would it be a complete moronic move to try and succeed and fight against curated Somm sites and the Total Wines of the world? I'd be looking to do this in NY (most likely Long Island) and I would probably only focus on a handful of regions. I don't know if a hyper specific kind of shop can succeed in this environment but am slowly building up research to see if this is feasible. Any shop owners here? Would love your insight.
