As an occasional smoker and tobacco aficionado, I am perplexed that the tasting note 'tobacco' comes up so frequently to describe earthy, oaky, or savory wines. Mostly because so few wine drinkers smoke, to be honest. Given that tobacco is such a varied product, ranging from light virginias to burley orientals, moreish pipe tobaccos, or peppery snuffs, what the hell is a vague descriptor like "tobacco" supposed to mean?
