Question regarding ordering wine online versus picking up locally...

I’m extremely new to wine. So I’m curious if this is a “known issue“ or not.
I found three wines that I absolutely loved from a local BevMo. Smooth, buttery reds. Pinot Noir.
I have never tasted red wine without a bite, bitterness or dry tongue. It was wonderful.
I signed up on wine.com, and ordered the exact same bottles. Upon arrival all were harsh, bitter, and “tannic / tanniny”.
Does ordering online and shipping commonly cause this? Possibly the heat or cold storage, riding in hot trucks, or sitting in sub-optimal environments/handling?
