Dinner date - what red wine should I bring?

I have a date coming up this week, and since he offered to cook for me, I offered to bring the wine. I don't know exactly what he'll be making, however, he's been studying french cuisine for over a decade. He also mentioned that he prefers red. I know next to nothing about wine, so some suggestions would be great!

I'd also like to keep it under $30. Thanks in advance!
