Right way to use coravin

It's common to see people say you need to squeeze once to push oxygen out of the needle before using the coravin. However with say model 11, it doesn't seem like you can do it. Which begs the question - is it really needed? Logically it seemingly makes sense but how come model 11 doesn't need it then?
