Moved out of Montreal in 2014 to west coast. At the time was into wine, have a collection, that now increasingly doesn't get drank as I've significantly cut down my alcohol consumption. Returned recently to visit some friends for a couple days. Past couple years had not dined out much (covid) in Montreal, but am making up for it this trip.
I've noticed that natural wine has taken over Montreal in a massive way. I'm not into natural wine, had too many funky off attempts, and for the little that I drink now I don't want to take chances on getting a gross taste that I have to refuse. I can usually recognize natural wine on a menu fairly easily, but when it's being spouted off to me by staff for what's available by the glass it's harder, especially with language barrier.
What is the polite way to decline natural wine? Some of the purveyors of it a these restaurants seem quite zealous about it and I don't want to offend. Do I say that I don't want unconventional wine? Don't want natural wine? Last night I resorted to water.
