What kind of wine do Portuguese use for cooking?

After my trip to Portugal, I am expanding my interest in Portuguese culture, cooking, and wine. I love David Leite's cookbooks for their comprehensiveness and authenticity. Several recipes in the book and elsewhere call for wine for cooking, particularly white wine. What would Portuguese people use as a cooking wine? I feel like Vinho Verde is just popular everywhere, but it doesn't feel like something I would normally want to use for cooking, low price aside.
