Please tell me there's hope - improperly stored wine (6 bottles) ~1.5 years later. What can I do?? - The Athan Zafirov Wine Blog
Hi all, I'll cut to the chase and say that I am attempting to not commit a murder on this fine Memorial Day over this scenario. Looking for:
- Any insight into what the possible quality of the wine is now (vinegar? undrinkable piss? probably fine?)
- Anything we can do to remedy what has been done (besides removing it from the attic and into a cooler location; check and check)
Background:
My husband and I have been traveling full-time since 2021, with a passive goal of visiting great wine locations around the world to start building an at-home wine collection. We visited Mendoza in December 2022 and shipped home (southeastern Pennsylvania, USA) 6 bottles of wine:
- (2) Corazon Del Sol, Reserve Cab Franc, Uco Valley Single Bock 13
- (2) 2019 Corazon Del Sol, Gran Reserva Malbec
- (2) Corazon Del Sol, Luminoso RMVG, Uco Valley 2020
My parents have been storing the wine for us in their PA home while we traveled. I recently returned home and discovered that they have been storing the wine (still in original packaging, so lain sideways/horizontally) in an attic room. Unfortunately, this room can get very hot during the summer - think musty old attic vibes, it is not temperature controlled, no A/C or fan. If I had to guess, it probably averages 75F during the spring/summer but likely can become much hotter than that during peak summer season here, possibly 80 or more.
I am currently pregnant and do not feel comfortable opening or trying the wine to discover its current quality. My husband will return home in a few weeks and he'll check then. I'm absolutely furious with my parents - my dad is a wine drinker who should 100% know better and I have no idea why he thought that storage solution was a good idea. My mom has also worked in nice restaurants and when I asked her if it could possibly be up in the attic she gave me a fearful look. We paid (for us) a good deal of money to get this wine home and I'm afraid it's ruined.
