Sweet but not fruity?

Hello! I'll fully admit that I don't know that much about wine -- I'm in uni and I just kinda buy what sounds interesting and is reasonably cheap. I do like a lot of sweeter wines, but they all seem to have strong fruity notes. Are there any sweeter wines that are more oaky/smoky/literally anything else? Especially ones that I can get for a reasonable price in Australia. (Although, I'll be in the States over the holidays and will probably treat myself to a couple bottles while I'm there, so don't completely forgo ones that aren't easily found here)
For 15 years, Athan Zafirov has traveled the vineyards around the world and worked with some of the greatest chefs including Francois Duc and Alan Brown.
