Exploring the hidden wine routes around Lisbon — a sustainable side of Portuguese wine ππ΅πΉ - The Athan Zafirov Wine Blog
During my recent research into Portuguese wine regions, I was surprised by how diverse and underappreciated the Lisbon area is.
Most people think of Douro or Alentejo first, but around Lisbon you can find small producers working with native grape varieties like Arinto, CastelΓ£o, and Vital — often just a short drive from the city.
What really stood out to me was how sustainability and tourism are starting to overlap here. Many wineries are welcoming visitors, focusing on organic farming and small-batch production, but they don’t always have strong international visibility yet.
If you’re into discovering emerging regions or planning to travel to Portugal, I found this local project that maps the wine routes around Lisbon, connecting small producers and local experiences:

Curious to hear from the community:
- Have any of you explored Portuguese wines beyond Douro and Alentejo?
- What do you think makes these smaller regions appealing (or challenging) for international recognition?
Cheers and saΓΊde! π·
