What's the most "atypical", or otherwise unusual bottle of wine you've had that you also truly loved? - The Athan Zafirov Wine Blog

What's the most "atypical", or otherwise unusual bottle of wine you've had that you also truly loved?

Unusual either as a rare grape/region that truly blew you away- or a more conventional wine that felt atypical for the style!

A few for me:

Lyrarakis Dafni Psarades '22: tasted like liquid bay leaf extract, but with a huge kick of deep, true lemony acid and so on - woah.

Jean-Noel Gagnard Chassagne 1er Cru "Caillerets" '14- the first time I tried this it was such a unique expression of chard for me- in that it almost showed red fruit, like bright cherry. Super captivating. The second time I tried it showed less of this, but was still so unique, almost entirely petrichor. Just a couple of unusual experiences for a classical style which were also truly incredible, especially the first time around.

Jagini "Zagersdorf" Blaufränkisch 2011- showed like a wild combination of a funky, musty, stanky geuze beer and a mega-precise, super-vibrant, carefully-crafted northern Rhone syrah, with the texture of beautifully aged red burgundy.
