So, I work in data and IT. I like it, it pays the bills, and I am not looking for a new primary job function. I really like wine though, and have recently played around with the thought of importing wine and selling it. My plan would be to start small scale with one or two quality producers from France not currently present in the market where I live (Denmark), and focus primarily on selling to restaurants, while also having a website for DTC. I have around 30K USD to get up and running the first 1-2 years. Not a lot but I am also not looking at a huge operation here, maybe 6-8 SKU’s at 20 cases each. Depends on what producers will agree to.
Now I know there are challenges here. Securing attractive producers that others have not already gotten to first is obviously one. Working only 10-15 hours a week on this would also be a barrier to success. But a plus for me is what success looks like. I don’t need to turn a profit initially, or even feed my family. If I can balance income and expenses after two years I would consider it good, and then see if I want to sink more time into it at that point. If not oh well, I tried it.
So, any thoughts on this from people who have tried something similar themselves, or just thoughts/input in general?
