What's the biggest mistake you made when you first started drinking red wine?

Mine was assuming every bottle should taste smooth right away. I bought a cheap, super-tannic bottle, drank it straight from the shelf without letting it breathe, and wondered why people enjoyed red wine at all.

A few better recommendations later, I realized how much serving temperature, decanting, and the style of wine can change the experience.
