how to get into wine with a very small budget

I am truly interested in wine and want to learn everything about it, the problem is, alcohol is expensive in Canada, and I find it difficult every time to justify spending around $20 on a bottle, especially if I don't know if it's any good.

So my question is where would you recommend I start? Specific region? grape variety? Any tip is appreciated.
